Alexa unlawfully storing children’s voice recordings – Amazon fined $25 million
The Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission have fined Amazon $25 million for violating federal children’s privacy laws through its Alexa personal assistant platform.
The government has alleged that Amazon has violated the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule (COPPA Rule) and the Federal Trade Commission Act (FTC Act) in regards to the Amazon voice assistant – Alexa.
The alleged violations include:
- Disregarding parents requests to have data deleted
- Engaging in unfair privacy practices with respect to Alexa users’ geolocation information and voice recordings
